Obtaining homeowner's insurance may seem overwhelming. We help by connecting you with multiple insurance agents who will compete for your business. Residents of Alabama should consider purchasing homeowners insurance policies to protect their dwelling and property in case of unforeseen damages. Mortgage lenders usually require homeowners to purchase insurance policy as part of the approval process for obtaining financing.

Presented below are the most common homeowners insurance policies in Alabama and their respective coverages:

  • HO-1. Fire, Lightning, Explosion, Windstorm, Riot, Civil Commotion, Vehicles, Aircraft, Smoke, Theft, Vandalism, Malicious Mischief and Volcanic Eruptions
  • HO-2. Includes perils in HO-1 along with Falling Objects, Weight of Ice, Snow or Sleet, Disacharge of Water or Steam, Sudden Accidental Rupture, Artificially Generated Electrical Current, Freezing of Plumbing and other Related Systems
  • HO-3. The most popular form that includes perils of HO-2 along with ther perils specified except for flood, earthquake, nuclear hazard or war.
  • HO-4. Policy for renters of houses or apartment. This covers perils in HO-2 along with additional liability coverage, additional living expense and possible medical coverage.
  • HO-6. Policy for condominum owners. Insures personal property and alterations not provided for by the condominium association. This normally covers everything stated in HO-2 perils.
  • HO-8. Policy for older homes where replacement value exceeds current market value. Normally excludes the following perils: Falling Objects, Weight of Ice, Snow, Sleet, Disacharge of Water or Steam, Sudden Accidental Rupture, Artificially Generated Electrical Current, Freezing of Plumbing and other Related Systems
Not all insurers use these exact terms to describe their home insurance coverage although most are similar. Be sure to read your policy and speak with an agent about your actual coverage.

There are a number of additional provisions which you can purchase in your policy including:

  • Personal Property. This will cover for physical injury, destruction or loss of personal property. This can refer to furnitures, appliances, even as personal as clothing. This does not always include provisions for jewelries, computers, antiques, guns, and so on. It is best to ask your agent on how to cover your valuable possessions.
  • Flood Insurance - depending on where your home is located, you might consider flood insurance
  • Earthquake Insurance - earthquake insurance is available through most insurance companies at an additional cost.
  • Optional Coverage. You can also purchase additional coverage such as replacement cost coverage, inflation guard, replacement of lost contents, and personal property endorsement.
